A Massachusetts law that went into effect on 14 December, 2005, requires all hospitals in the state to provide Emergency Contraceptives to "female rape victim of childbearing age". The Massachusetts Catholic Conference opposed this law, with their representative stating that they believe the law interferes with religious freedom. This law also contradicts the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. Catholic church teaching, however, supports providing emergency contraceptives to rape victims who are not pregnant since it can be considered a form of defense against an unjust aggression.
