The 1st Continental Congress places the militia at Boston under its control and authorizes ten additional companies of riflemen to be raised. (U.S. Army and Infantry Branch Birthday)

Congress offers Virginia Militia Colonel George Washington a commission as "General and Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army." He accepts the next day, but refuses a salary, asking only that his expenses be paid.

A brilliant flacking maneuver by Major General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's Corps catches the Union army by surprise. Jackson is wounded by his own troops at nightfall, and dies a week later of pneumonia. Thus begining the downfall of the Confederate States of America.

12 year old drummer boy Willie Johnson, 3rd Vermont Infantry is presented the Medal of Honor, the youngest person ever to receive it.

The Army Signal Corps establishes the first Weather Service. A group of 22 Signal Corps observer-sergeants is used to report observations daily to Washington, D.C., by telegragh.

Army Surgeon Major George N. Sternberg discovers the germ causing pneumonia. He also does research on cholera, yellow fever, and other diseases, becoming known as the "father of American bacteriology."

Congress establishes The Army of the United States (AUS) composed of the Regular Army and Army Reserve plus Army National Guard personal called to federal service. In addition, the Veterinary Corps is established, one officer and 16 enlisted men for every 400 animals in the service.
